Because of its bone-like mechanical properties and X-ray transparency, PEEK is the material of choice in many spinal implant applications. Its transparency is an advantage for doctors and patients, by using imaging methods for more accurate implant placement, and monitoring of the healing process.
PEEK implants for maxillofacial surgery and cervical vertebrae are easier to manufacture than metal or cobalt chrome. Due to the low thermal conductivity of PEEK, patients have less sensitivity to temperature changes.
The growing demand for higher performance materials in orthopedic applications has opened the door for PEEK in next generation products.
A large number of new implants are being developed in cardiovascular applications with PEEK as assembly components and stand alone implants, not only because of its electrical isolation properties, but also because of its outstanding mechanical performance.
Compared with other plastics, VESTAKEEP® PEEK is the material of choice for chemical resistance to bodily fluids. And when used in injection molding, provides positive weight benefits and the opportunity for part consolidation and design freedom.
